Some More Events

Hello again all,

Today I will be discussing a couple of up coming events. These should be far enough in advance that you can check them out yourself or at least mention to some one else for their use.

Ok so the first is a major event happening in Austin, Texas. The event is a yearly festivity/social/tech gathering of sorts. It is Southwest by Southwest this year it takes place March 12-21st. This festival is broken up into 3 parts. This years festivity are split up as follows Interactive12-16, Film12-20, Music17-21.

So What is Southwest by Southwest(SXSW), South by Southwest® (SXSW®) Conferences & Festivals offer the unique convergence of original music, independent films, and emerging technologies. Fostering creative and professional growth alike, SXSW® is the premier destination for discovery. Year after year, the event is a launching pad for new creative content. New media presentations, music showcases and film screenings provide buzz-generating exposure for creators and compelling entertainment for audiences. Conference panel discussions present a forum for learning; business activity thrives at the Trade Shows and global networking opportunities abound. Austin serves as the perfect backdrop for SXSW®, where career development flourishes amid the relaxed atmosphere. Intellectual and creative intermingling among industry leaders continues to spark new ideas and carve the path for the future of each ever-evolving field, long after the events’ conclusion.

I personally have not attended one of these festivities since it happens towards the end of our school semester when our work load is the heaviest. Next year after graduation I will make it a point to go and check out the event.  You can check out their site here if you like.

Something more local is a flashbootcamp being hosted by Dave Gillem; he is the Interactive Creative Director at Travelocity and a graduate of The Art Institute of Dallas. The event is currently sold out, but I am sure if there is more of a demand he will host another workshop.

According to his site the workshop is for beginners in flash.  You are guaranteed to walk away with a good foundation on Flash with real examples, tips and tricks, and hand-on exercises.

Here is a little info about Dave posted on the site: Dave Gillem is the Interactive Creative Director for Travelocity and operates his own studio under the name Crucial Limit. He is a graduate of the Art Institute of Dallas and now sits on the Advisory Board for the school. He was one of the technical reviewers for the Flash CS3 test offered by Brainbench. Dave has been doing interactive design for over 12 years, using Flash since version 3, and drawing on walls since age 2. He has received numerous awards for his client work using Flash and is very passionate about the Flash Platform.

I highly encourage you to check it out and keep checking to see if he offers more of this type of events.

And finally this is something I subscribe to. It’s the Adobe News Flash Letter. The letter is an electronic delivery of information which gives you dates of upcoming events across the United States. It also makes references to what other developers are working on at Adobe.  You can sign up for this news letter in the Adobe website, or here.

Hello all, my apologies for not posting last week. The weather didn’t exactly co-operate in North Texas. Record setting snow, the NBA All Star Game and festivities, and a couple of sick kids made it impossible to give you a productive post, so this week we will be making up for it.

Ok so this blog is suppose to be about things going on around town that will aid in the development of one personal business. I will list events that have happened or will happen around the DFW. So in this blog I will be discussing, WordPress Users Group,  and the Expert Panel that was hosted this past Tuesday by IMUG.

Desing Groups Around Dallas

February 3, 2010 at 1:58 am (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Three years into this program have allowed for great networking and expansion of my portfolio. People I have met while at “The Art Institute of Dallas” and other endeavours have guided me through the long bulky road that is design.

On a monthly basis there are groups which meet around Dallas Fort Worth. They are designed based groups with developers attending as well. Current organization that I subscribe to or attend when I can are; Refresh Dallas, D-flex, IMUG, DFW Hispanic Professionals.   These groups typically meet around town at public locations or Academic campuses.

Refresh Dallas meets every month and rotates among business around Dallas. They have held meeting at; The Art Institute of Dallas, IMC2, and other locations around town. Usually a speaker comes in presents on a particular topic and opens the floor for questions and answer sessions. Usually the meeting last about 2-3 hours. After the initial presentation you can mingle with the rest of the group and get to know your fellow developers. This group is open to the designer community and has other established partner groups around the country.

D-flex Adobe Flex user group, this is the largest Flex community in the United States. It is headed by Jonathan Campos who is currently a Principal Architect at Miller and Associates in Dallas Texas and Co-Owner of UnitedMindset. This group also meets once a month at The University of Texas Dallas Campus. The meeting typically last about 2 hours. You can get there early bring your laptop and learn flex as you go.  After the meeting which typically includes a guest speaker and a special topic to review that has to do with flex, you will et to meet and greet. Typically you can grab some food and converse with fellow developers for about an hour or so untill everyone leaves.

IMUG is a community of students from The Art institute of Dallas Which meets typically on a weekly basis. Usually grads from Ai don’t show up to weekly meetings as this are geared more towards current active students. Usually on a yearly basis, there is a huge meet and greet which allows for interaction between students and graduates. This has allowed for us the student to gain industry information about current events in our industry. This network that has been established though small, it is very effective.

This design community is still growing in the metroplex. These groups are taking advantage of the great skill sets that are available and people who are willing to share it. Although these groups are small in comparisson with others they are a great networking tool and a way to maybe get a lead in jobs that are or may  become available in the field.

My Introduction

January 27, 2010 at 5:22 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , )

Hello my name is Jesus H. Garcia, I am a student at “The Art Institute of Dallas”. I am currently enrolled in course ADB2002, Copywriting for PR & Promotions, My Professor is Carl Rossini. Our assignment for the semester is to keep up with a blog, I get to choose the subject of interest. For the next 7 weeks I will be updating this blog with Interesting topics, news and events affecting the young entrepreneur community in Dallas Fort Worth.
Since commencing school 5 years ago, my goals include attaining the skill set to establish my business. The road to accomplishing my goal is almost over, though it has been long and rigorous. I completed my first two years of academics  at “Remington College” where I received an associate in Business Information Systems. This was a foundation to manage my business. During my time at Remington, I learned; good and moral accounting practices, establishing and maintaining professional relationships and good ethics towards people in general.
My creative spirit was tapped during my last semester at Remington . I was forced to take a web development class, which then I thought was a complete waste of time. Successfully completing the course and taking interest in design I know knew I wanted to go in business in the web development field.
Six months after graduation, I stumbled across “The Art Institute of Dallas”. I conducted some research, liked the school reviews and work produced by their graduates. A month of paper work and a few thousand dollars later I was sitting in my first official class at a design school. Not just a design school, an Internationally and reputed recognized Design school. Where the next crucial phase to accomplishing my goal was about to start.
